Hey friends, [JOE AGENT] here with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices PenFed Realty Texas. Whether you're moving across the country or just across the street, moving is no small task, and unless you're a professional bodybuilder, you've likely considered hiring a moving company. It can feel strange when you hire movers for the first time. They will pick up your personal objects, load them into a truck you're not driving, and set them in your new home, and that can feel uncomfortable for many people. Here are 3 things to consider if you're deciding if movers are worth the money.
Number 1: The distance and timeline.
How far are you moving from your current residence, and how many opportunities are you going to have to drive from one location to the other? If you're moving across town, but your timelines for move-out and move-in overlap, you may not need to take everything you own in one trip. But if you're moving across the country, you may only want to make one large trip. In that case, hiring movers may make sense in terms of efficiency and gas savings.
Number 2: The amount of stuff you have.
Are you moving out of a studio apartment or a 3 bedroom home? Are you storing items in the attic that you haven't yet considered in your moving plans? What about items in a storage locker that you now have space for? Do you have a blender, coffee machine, air fryer or other large items tucked away in a closet? Moving may give you an opportunity to sort your personal items, label them how you'd like and ensure they arrive in perfect condition, but my clients often underestimate the sheer volume of the items in their home.
Number 3: Do you have the time?
Moving is stressful, and you may not have the mental bandwidth to deal with a complicated move. Organizing, packing, loading, driving, unloading, and then reorganizing may be a bit much for only you to deal with. You can save yourself a massive headache if you are able to take even a few of those tasks off of your hands and let a professional deal with them.
It's important to remember that there are different levels to home-mover packages. You may want a mover to only assist you with your large furniture items like dressers or a couch. You may want to box your own items and hire movers to load and unload. Or, you may want the company to organize, box, load and unload so you don't have to think about any of that as you make your move. If cost is the prohibitor, choosing to just have the large items moved professionally can save you some money.
